Sharing his message, Rishab Shetty wrote, "My salute to Captain #SmitMachchhar. Even after being seriously injured, he put the lives of others before his own and fought bravely to protect them. His courage helped save hundreds of lives. Praying for your speedy recovery and good health. India is proud of you. #CaptainSmit #India" The actor filmmaker's words reflect the widespread admiration that has followed the incident, with Machchhar's actions receiving praise from people across India and abroad.
According to reports, the dramatic incident unfolded while Flydubai flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Machchhar inside the cockpit, leaving him seriously wounded. Despite suffering multiple injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to enter and help restrain the attacker. The aircraft had also gone into a steep descent during the crisis, dropping thousands of feet in a very short period before the situation was brought under control.
The plane, a Boeing 737, was eventually diverted and made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Reports say 174 passengers were aboard the flight, while other accounts have reported a higher total number when crew members are included. Off-duty pilots and passengers also played an important role in helping stabilise the situation after the cockpit door was opened. The aircraft landed safely, and the passengers were subsequently transported onward to Tel Aviv.
Captain Machchhar's actions have since drawn praise from several prominent figures. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with him by video call while the pilot was recovering in hospital, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also publicly praised his actions. Machchhar is being treated in Abu Dhabi after initially receiving medical attention in Saudi Arabia, and reports have described his condition as stable. The circumstances surrounding the cockpit attack remain under investigation by authorities, while the motive has not been conclusively established.
For Rishab Shetty, the incident was an occasion to recognise the courage shown by an individual who found himself facing an extraordinary emergency at thousands of feet in the air. His tribute joins messages from several members of the film fraternity who have expressed their respect for Captain Machchhar and wished him a full recovery. As investigations into the incident continue, the captain's response during the crisis remains the central focus of the tributes, with Rishab Shetty ending his message on a note that captures the sentiment shared by many, "India is proud of you."
